Printed circuit boards, or PCBs, form the base for electronic devices. They provide the physical support piece, as well as an area for wiring and surface-mounted components to be attached. Single-sided electronics circuit boards can be constructed using either through-hole or surface mount technology. Through-hole technology involves passing the component lead through a hole and soldering it to the board. This is ideal for rework, as the component can be removed and reinserted with minimal disruption to the circuit. Surface mount technology, on the other hand, involves placing the component onto the surface of the substrate and soldering it. This is a better choice for high-speed applications, as the components can be placed more closely together.

Types of Electronics Circuit Boards
A double-sided circuit board has a copper layer on both sides of the substrate, and is connected through holes called vias. This allows for more routing flexibility than single-sided boards and is ideal for high-frequency digital. Double-sided boards are also more durable than single-sided PCBs, and can withstand greater temperature variations.
Multi-layer circuit boards are the most advanced type of electronic PCBs, and can have up to thirty layers. The conductive pathways on the layers are separated by insulating substrate layers, which can be made of various materials, such as prepreg, FR4, or ceramic. The layers are etched and bonded together under heat and pressure, before being drilled and plated to create vias for connections between the different circuit layers.
A flex circuit board is a special type of multi-layer PCB that can be bent, or flexed, to allow it to bend and flex with the component. This type of PCB is commonly found in mobile phones, tablets and laptops. It is also a common feature in automotive and aerospace electronics, as it can be used in environments with high temperatures and requires low coefficient of expansion.
