As per Planespotters, N840AN is a 6.1 year old Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that was delivered to the airline in January 2019.
Of the 787-9 variant, American Airlines has 22 of them in their fleet.
Furthermore, of that 22, all but three are in active service, with an average age of 7.4 years.
UPDATE #3 @ 1247 UK time – With Rome still being far away, there could be a reason for this choice of diversion.
Rome Fiumicino Airport could be best handled to deal with the situation onboard the aircraft.

It is currently transiting over Georgian airspace during the diversion to Rome.

Rome Diversion Confirmed…

UPDATE #5 @ 1311 UK time – American Airlines flight status confirms Rome diversion.
However, no additional details other than a new departure time from Rome has been added.
Note the small difference in time between arrival and re-departure again.
If it is as suspected a bomb threat, then this flight will be grounded for some time.
Authorities will need to make relevant checks before the airplane is released.
UPDATE #6 @ 1327 UK time – AA292 is currently off the coast of Turkey.
Rome Fiumicino Airport still the chosen diversion field as it stands.

UPDATE #7 @ 1342 UK time – ADS-B coverage of the aircraft is limited currently.
We suspect this is due to the coverage strength in the area.
No information at this time to suggest the aircraft has gone down.
ADS-B strength isn’t perfect everywhere around the world.
UPDATE #8 @ 1345 UK time – American Airlines has commented on the diversion:

Why Rome?
EMERGENCY UPDATE #11 @ 1448 UK time – There has been a lot of conversation regarding the Rome diversion point.
It is an interesting point to raise.
Such a choice would be an indicator that the threat isn’t serious and imminent at this stage.
Furthermore, if it was an imminent threat, the aircraft may have diverted elsewhere instead.
But with the mention of a threat, regardless of it’s state, the diversion still needs to happen.
This is so then authorities can check the aircraft to be 100% sure.
