Brits Are Ditching Crowds for Culture, Says Wizz Air
British holidaymakers are redefining their summer getaways. According to recent data from Wizz Air, UK travellers are moving away from crowded tourist hotspots. Instead, they are increasingly seeking authentic, affordable, and culturally rich experiences.
This shift is reshaping travel trends, with nearly half (46%) of Brits craving unique adventures and 49% prioritising destinations that offer better value for money.
As overtourism concerns grow, alternative European destinations are stealing the spotlight for 2025.
The Rise of ‘Off-the-Beaten-Track’ Destinations
Traditional holiday spots are losing their appeal as one in three Brits (33%) worries about overtourism.
Instead, travellers are turning to lesser-known gems in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Wizz Air reports a significant rise in seat sales to countries like Czechia, Estonia, and Montenegro during the peak travel months of May to August.
This trend is set to continue, with bookings for the first half of 2025 showing a surge for destinations like Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Albania.
These underrated locations offer a perfect blend of unique experiences and budget-friendly prices, attracting adventurous Brits looking to explore without breaking the bank.
Seeking Value and Cultural Immersion
Rising costs in popular tourist hubs are pushing 48% of Brits to venture further for one-of-a-kind experiences. More than half (54%) want to immerse themselves in local cultures, far from crowded resorts and overpriced attractions.
Whether it’s exploring historic towns, sampling local cuisines, or discovering hidden natural wonders, UK travellers are prioritising authenticity over convenience.
This desire for meaningful connections with destinations is driving the popularity of places like Moldova and Montenegro, where rich histories and vibrant cultures come without the premium price tag.
Changing Travel Habits
The way Brits plan their holidays is evolving too. While 60% still believe booking early secures the best deals, a growing number—11%—are embracing spontaneous travel, reserving trips just days before departure.
However, 32% feel anxious about booking too far in advance, fearing plans might change. This shift toward flexibility reflects a broader trend of travellers seeking freedom and adaptability in their holiday planning.

Wizz Air and Affordable Exploration
Wizz Air is meeting this demand for discovery with new routes and ultra-low fares. The airline recently launched flights from Birmingham to Romania’s hidden gems, Sibiu and Suceava, with tickets starting at just £17.99.
These affordable options make it easier for Brits to explore Europe’s lesser-known destinations without stretching their budgets.
Yvonne Moynihan, Managing Director at Wizz Air UK, shared her insights. “Through our Customer First Compass initiative, we’re committed to making travel accessible and affordable while delivering incredible experiences.”
“British travellers want more than just a holiday—they’re after authentic, culturally rich adventures at a fair price. We’re excited to see growing interest in destinations like Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, and Montenegro.”
“With our low fares and expanding UK network, we’re giving people more opportunities to create unforgettable memories.”

Looking Ahead
As the latter half of 2025 approaches, UK travellers are embracing a new way to explore Europe. By choosing affordable, less-crowded destinations, they’re discovering the joy of authentic experiences.
From the rugged beauty of the Balkans to the charm of Eastern Europe, these emerging hotspots offer incredible value and unforgettable adventures.
With airlines like Wizz Air leading the way, the world is more accessible than ever for Brits ready to explore beyond the usual.
